I went to look at this horse yesterday: Castanet Classifieds - FAMILY HORSE - KID APPROVED!
I rode him western, and bareback. When I went to canter, he wouldn't canter. He went super fast trot.. but nothing.
I am not interested in showing or anything like that, just trails, bareback, and fun riding :)
But, I need a horse that can canter.
On the ad, it says "walk, trot, canter, no vices"
we asked the lady, she said he needs work, as she has only cantered him once or twice the whole year! They are ranch people, and they use him for pack trips and hunting, so they train him to only walk/trot. they said they dont want their horses to think they can canter o_O
He is bombproof though! Anyone could ride him.. loads easily.. hop on his back as he's eating, sit on his bum, stand on his back.. he is def. not a spooky horse.
He is gorgeous though! the pictures don't do him justice.. they don't know exactly what breed he is, but he looks like a cross between qh/draft/wb or something..
he has a gorgeous build, good conformation, he is dun, with a dorsal stripe, and zebra markings on legs, and black tips on his ears.
The guy that owns him, I don't like the way he rides at all.. he is aggressive with the horse, and to get him to go faster, out of nowhere he whacks the horse with a rope, and the horse jumps forwards.
I feel bad leaving him there, and he looks like he is in need of some love. All he has done his whole life, is a dude horse, where they throw the saddle on, throw someone on, ride, then hop off, throw saddle off..
I talked with my aunt, she thinks, if I work on him in a round arena, lunging him and stuff, I could teach him to canter, then I can ride him.
But, I think he could go in any direction, barrels/english/jumping
What do you think?
