Today Pluto and I just rode on the flat. He is very stiff in his back right leg, so we mostly tired to work on picking up the right lead on that leg. Also, we worked on bending. The other horses I have ridden at my new barn will bend for you, but because of his stiffness in his leg, he doesn't like to. He is very stubborn and lazy but for some reason that makes him really fun to ride. I am hoping these pictures work. I will upload the video when it is done uploading to youtube, it takes the video a while.
Best tip I can give you right now is keep your elbows in at your side. Don't move your hands or wrists, the movement comes from your elbows & ONLY up or down, not back. Keep that in mind for now.
The only thing that's really glaring at me is your seat. You NEED to do more sitting trot work before you start cantering as you are all over the place when you canter.
We are mostly cantering on his right lead, which is really hard to sit to. Do you have any advice on how to sit to it? It is so much easier to sit on his left lead, and on other horses I can sit also.
Looks like you are doing well, but there's still much to improve. Practice the sitting trot. Relax your legs a bit more and absorb the motion through your back and abdominal. Make sure you keep a deep seat. Don't forget to relax your arms and keep your elbows in. The sitting trot is easier to practice while on a lunge line. That way you can fully concentrate on your balance. Soon you will be on your way to mastering the sitting trot! Personally, I found the sitting trot to be more difficult to learn than the posting trot. Take your time. Good luck!
yeah, I find the sitting trot in a saddle the hardest out of everything... haha. I can sit fine bareback and on other horse's at the canter. Its just Pluto's right lead canter and the sitting trot that get me every time... =)
1.) Sit back more, there should be a line from your shoulder to your leg. (google horse riding position and you can see pictures of what I'm talking about)
2.) Elbows should be closer to your sides, not out like wings. LOL. Happens a lot with people just starting to canter.
For just starting you're looking pretty good. I a lot of people first starting to canter lean forward, you just have to get used to cantering and develop a better seat. Try posting to the canter, helped me a lot.
Oh, and one more thing stirrup at the ball of your foot, and try not to point your toes out.
Thanks! I was having major problems that day. I was probably trying to start pumping him forward because he wouldn't listen and I was getting mad. I will do that for sure!
