A trainer once put a crop behind my back like that and it is incredibly awkward. Your elbows have to be behind your back and it forces a bit of an arch. I am just told to roll my shoulders when I first get on, while holding the reins, and it gets me to loosen up a bit. (I'm also a stiff rider.) As strange as it sounds, my trainer has also had me keep my elbows moving slightly so that they stay loose. You could also sit back a bit (Yet another problem of mine.).
