Horse critique after 10 months-please give your feedback

Well, tonight I finally snapped and just had to take some body shots, I couldn't wait for the 12 month deadline. I know I know I know, these are not the best pictures for judgment. However, it is not easy to coordinate both an inexperienced father and a fidgety horse that hadn't been ridden for 2 days combined with rainy weather. I would like muscle growth feedback, and conformation critique is always welcome.

Because the only replacement for one or two good large photos is an overload of bad tiny photos, right?

I'm not good at judging but I do know he's very handsome and I think he looks healthy n.n

He looks more bulky, but not necessarily more muscled...he looks extremely well cared for though, and I LOVE his long full tail!!!

Thanks guys! He has gained weight, as shortly after we got him we found out he either had ulcers all along or he got them soon after arriving, and once those were over he held weight a lot better. He also gained an inch plus in height in the year I've had him (got him as a late 4 year old, he's a bit of a late bloomer!), so hopefully now that he's done growing taller he will muscle out even more. The biggest difference that I can see, looking at this objectively, is his hind end. In the first set of pictures, his hind is basically triangular. In the latter set, it looks more muscled and full, at least to me. Does anyone else see this? The main area of improvement I'd like to see is around the shoulder to wither area, which a clinician has pointed out to me, apparently hills will help with this.

And like I said, any conformation critique is more than welcome! I have a bit of a mommy's eye when I look at my own horse, so I'm not too keen on it.

He is less angular, yes...still needs work, but yes, definitely an improvement compared to when you got him.

Lunging in side reins or draw reins will help too (given they are properly adjusted), as they will help him collect himself, without interference from a rider. Lunge work over trot poles, and small jumps could make a difference too. If he's only 5, he may just not be done maturing yet...I have two 2 year olds, and one has quite a bit of muscle, and the other is more "fluff"...but both of them get the same amount of work, so I think it's just a maturity thing.

It is impressive that after nearly a year it appears he managed to grow another set of ears! :)

I do see some muscle defiinition in that hind end when looking directly at his tail. The first pictures his bum looks like a nicely filled, jiggly water balloon to me, in the newer photos you can actually see definition of the different muscles...lines actually going through separating them and they don't look like jiggly jelly at all.

The side shots look slightly more defined too, even if he can use a little more muscling, you can definitely see he has some there and there are some more muscle separation lines that were not there before. Definitely looking a lot less like an old retired and unused skinny thoroughbred racehorse and more like a performance warmblood ready for some fun!

You've got those definition lines coming in which shows that what you are doing is working great, keep it up and I am sure that by the end of the season you will have a nicely muscled horse on your hands.
