Riding the horse as it is now is no indication as to how it will be in good condition If you have the time why not work on establishing a good relationship and some good leadership skills from the ground while the horse is filling out and getting healthy. It will also help you build a foundation if he is not quite as calm as you thought he was going to be when fit. He is nice, I think he looks worth the trouble if not neccessarily that amount of money.
