    new mare - be gentle

I traded Style today. Style is my 10 year old green broke pony. Well, I should say tomorrow. I'm dropping off Style and picking up this new mare. She's 5 years old and is pregnant with a mule. (she's a Tennessee Walker). She seems to be very very sweet. She's very smooth. I am bringing her home for the next month or two to hopefully get her to a healthy weight. I don't know if I can get a pregnant mare to a healthy weight in that short time but then I'm taking her back to the place that I am getting her from to foal because they want the baby. They purchased her just the other day solely for the baby. They were going to fatten mama and sell her in the spring but this works out perfect for me because I want a good trail horse for my husband. So I'm not sure if you can give a good critique on her or not. I'll place pix as she gets prettier and healthier... and of course of the baby. I can't wait to see the flop eared baby!

I'm having a hard time uploading so here is just one pic. I'll take better pics when I get her home and clean her up tomorrow.

She is skinny and looks sad =[ but with good work she'll be very good looking =]

Sad looking is not being mean it means she looks like she is sad.

    She looks sweet!
She's not severly underweight so I don't think it'll take that long to fatten her up.

It does look like she has a steep croup, but its hard to tell.

I can't wait to see the baby either. I bet its going to be so cute!

    Green Broke
Try giving her some corn and maybe second or third cutting hay. I don't know which one. But if you use 3rd cutting don't give her too much, it's really rich.

    Cute mare.

I bet all the "stolen carrots" OLD Farmpony has in that bag of hers will be fed to this mare.....right?

Good luck. I think under your watchful eye she will come around soon enough for the baby. She looks very sweet.

She is thin but has a very sweet face. Your going to have a gaited mule? How cool is that!
We have a friend who breeds mules and started breeding to TWH's a few years ago. He has been very happy with the foals. I'm a firm believer (not based on research) that the gait is passed from the mother not the stallion so I'm betting the baby will have the gait.

Darn I just reread your post. You have to give up the baby? No fair!
