20 Metre Circles

My Dressage Tests Have 20 Metre Circles

20 Metre circles are my worst nightmare. We can never get them correct. I think its because of my lack of understanding of how to actually ride a 20 metre circle correctly. I use to do them 4 times a week over and over again with my old dressage instructor, but now I cannot possibly think of how to ride them. I believe the arena that my tests are taking place in is a 60 x 20 arena.

The 20 metre circles need to be proformed at E - Circling Left and B - Circling Right.

Thanks in advance Guys.

Ok, I'm going to try and remember how to ride a 20-metre circle.
I was told that your horse should be straight at E and B in a circle but only for a moment. After that you should start bending again. And with the flexion, you should only be able to see the corner of his eye and smidgen of his nose. Outside hand contols the speed, inside hand controls the movement. I was told that a lot of beginner riders give too much with their outside hand and then their horses taken advantage of that and quit the circle. He shouldn't be excessively leaning on your inside leg either, so bump him off it if you need to. I have my first dressage test in February too! :) But I'm doing prelim.

To ride a 20m circle, think of a diamond - two points a B & E and the other two points on the centre line (above L and below I). When you ride the circle ride DIRECTLY TO THESE POINTS keeping the bend through your horses body correct. Remember also that you should ride one stride coming to the point, one stride on the point, and one stride away from the point to help keep your circle from falling in. If you follow this you will ride PERFECT circles. I was taught this when I was 4 years old and I still follow it. Never had anything but glowing comments about the shape and size of my circles :) good luck with your test
