Back Pain

Hey, I have been riding for about 14 years. I train ponies and horses all the time, but recently, whenever I ride a horse for more than a half hour, my back starts to kill me. It never happens with ponies and I'm only 21 years old. My trainer says I'm not doing anything wrong and that I ride horses and ponies very similarly position wise.

Do I need more muscle in my back? It's nothing medical, I already checked that out.

Maybe. If nothing is medically wrong, try off-the-horse exercises to build muscle in your back.

When I was in the Army, we did the "cobra" and "the plank". Cobra is lying flat on your belly and then raising your head and shoulders up off the ground using more of your back than your arms.

The plank. Ahhh the plank. A full body strengthening exercise where you lie flat on your belly and then lift yourself up into a straight line. You will be up on your toes and your elbows. Hold that for 10 seconds at first, and do it a few times. Steadily progress until you can hold yourself for a minute or so at a time.

Both are good exercises to do while watching TV or reading a magazine placed strategically on the floor.

Hi Piper,
If you are suffering from Back pain, it's your abdominal core muscles that you need to build up. There is a group of muscles in your tummy that wrap around your abdomen and spine that give your spine support a bit like a corset. I also suffer with back pain and my back is very stiff and slightly tilted in position which is a real pain when I canter as I have to get in a two point position.
If I were you I would go and see a physio and get some exercises. I suffered in silence and finally went when I was really bad, pain down into my ankle and could hardly move. It took months to get better and I'm still suffering over a year later.
There must be some thing not quite right with your back that is being aggravated it's probably muscular.
Don't do what I did and leave it till its really bad (a thing most people do when they work in the medical profession). Its easier to fix a small problem.
