    Bareback Riding

I need some advice on bareback riding. Since I don't own my own horses I don't have a saddle, but I ride bareback on the horses that are in the field next to me. I look after the horses for their owner and I get to ride them.

The one mare I ride a lot right now is very sweet and I trust her a lot but when we trot she is very bouncy and I tend to go forward sometimes which of course throws me off balance. I do grab onto her mane and try to keep my heels down, but I was wondering if there are some other things I could try to be better balanced on her. I have taken some lessons and am planning on taking more in the spring but of course bareback is certainly different than in the saddle. Any ideas would really be appreciated.

Your knees help you stay on. You squeez your upper thy and knee. Keep your back straight and heels down. Do NOT make the mistake and rap your legs around her stomach if you happen to be slipping, that would make her think that you want her to go faster. For practice for keeping your knees locked on is putting paper under them and make sure it doesnt fall.

Thanks! I will do that. If I feel I'm slipping I try to grab onto the mane to keep my balance and I will have to work on keeping my heels down. I'll do the paper idea too - that is a good idea!
