    Don't forget to consider saddle fit. If you could try a different saddle or two on him, and see if he does the same thing, you might know whether or not it could be the way the saddle is sitting behind his shoulders. Just something easy to try.

    Gosh...people need to read initial posts...the OP said that she had never tried asking the pony to canter, only a sister and mom had...SO it's not the OP at this point.

    OP, I think you've just got to get comfortable cantering on your lesson horse, and then just keep trying on your pony. Maybe he's just never been taught how to canter undersaddle...so ask your trainer how to teach him, without just making him dead to your legs.
