Does Anyone agree..

I just wanted to see if anyone else understood what I mean by this...

I know it is good to be well rounded and able to ride more than one horse but its hard when I take my lessons I ride a different horse almost everytime lol. She only has 4 lesson horses..but once I feel like I figure the horse out that I am on one day, the next time it has changed and I am trying to figure that one out again. I am a begginer and it is kind of difficult and hinders me a little, I think.

I am NOT saying it is easier if you have your own horse to ride every time because I know there comes challenges with that also..it just seems like a huge advantage.

Can anyone else relate?

I can see how for a beginner it might be overwhelming but as an experienced rider I love riding new horses. The figuring out is fun for me and tests my skills. It also helps me to be a much better rider down the road. When I had my own mare I loved it, but I also still loved riding other horses to get a break from riding a horse I knew so well that there were few suprises.

I used to take lessons at a riding school and this always used to happen to me. Once I got comfortable and started getting used to a horse, my instructor would swap me to a different one. It used to really annoy me until I realised that she was doing it to help me. Each different horse would help with some aspect. For example, I have always had trouble wih being a stiff rider. Once I started relaxing more on a relatively smooth horse, I would get swapped to the bounciest horse on the yard, so I could learn to sit even more so.

If you're uncomfortable with keeping swapping then tell your instructor, she'll try not to swap you so much if you're not comfortable. After all, you are the one paying for lessons!

But sometimes it is nice to ride something different, even though you get very close to one horse, different horses will always have something new they can teach you.

Have you mentioned to your instructor that you find it frustrating?

Maybe you can suggest your ride the same horse a few weeks in a row and then switch to a different horse.

I could say something but because of the day I take my lesson and circumstances with the lesson horses and whoever else happens to be taking that day, until I advance to one of her horses who I get is who I get. If that makes any sense lol.

That is frustrating. I recently rode at a barn who just put people on whatever horse was available when they showed up it seems. I was already someone who was confident riding but I was learning a new discipline and I wished I had at least known before showing up "hey you're riding the horse a little too small for you today, have fun!". I eventually told my trainer how much I really liked one of the horses and she took a mental note that whenever he was available she'd let mentors him.

I see how its frustrating but I'm glad you see it's also helpful. Hope everything works out well, I'm sure you'll be a great rider in the long run!

Yeah that makes sense to me, and don't worry, everyone needs to vent from time to time! :)

And if there are only four horses, in time you will actually get used to the habits of all of them, so then you'll be fine whichever one you ride. Well good luck with it anyway, I'm sure you'll be fine :)

I do agree with you, but I know I'm in the minority on that one. After years of riding different school horses, I'm thrilled to be riding just one horse. It gives me time to really get in tune with his movements and tendencies. When I know the horse as well as I know him, it gives me more time to work in myself.

^^ that's kind of what I mean, I could work on myself better if I wasn't trying to constantly get in tune with a new horse. My day will come though when I will have my own horse to ride : ), but in the meantime I just have to deal with this.

I would agree that riding a different horse every time is more challenging BUT I think it's going to be VERY good for you in the long run. I never had my own horse until ...she's coming in two weeks!....and so I have ridden a million different horses with different trainers or friends and it has really helped me to become a well-rounded rider. A lot of people who get that advantage with their own horse from a young age lose some flexibility along the way. They learn how to do it on THAT particular horse and when they have to ride one they aren't familiar with they don't do so well. I'm not a talented rider but I will get on any sane horse and ride it. It takes away that inhibition and it makes you more able to ride a variety of horses with a variety of temperaments.
