I have a 15.3 hand 8 year old QH gelding that I would like to do hunter under saddle and maybe western pleasure with. He was first trained in western pleasure, then got training in hunter under saddle and jumping (hunter style.) I want him to be consistent, have a longer, deeper stride, and a nice headset. I can get him to do these things really well sometimes, but he lacks the consistency. The people I got him from said he could do AQHA with a little more work. I would like to try to do that with him, but I'm stuck as to where to go from here. I'm going to be working with a trainer soon (not a HUS or AQHA trainer, but it's something) but until then I would like some ideas on what to do. First off, do you think he has the potential? He has a really great jog (unfortunately I don't have a video of that) but he needs more impulsion for a HUS trot, and canter too. He's not a lazy horse, in that I squeeze and he does nothing; he's very responsive to my leg and likes to go. But he just doesn't have enough impulsion. If you think he has potential, where should I go from here? Also how do I need to be riding him to get the most out of him? The previous owner rode him really well and he looked super good for her but I just haven't seemed to get him to perform as well. (I've had him a little over a year.) I just need some direction here...
*I know there's lots of controversy out there about AQHA HUS horses being too slow and heads too low...I don't want mine to be like that. I want him to have the nice headset but it not be artifical. And even if I don't show AQHA that's fine, but I want him to have a better hunter frame.
