To let our readers know when has one idea finished and when is the other starting. Also starting your next sentence with a Capital letter is a good idea because otherwise we'll squeeze our eyes out trying to find that little black dot on this white page.
Regarding your friend: Sometimes we have friends better than us at things, sometimes they are worse. But I thought we should help out our friends to get better?...What have you done to help her out?
