Going for my first solo hack tomorrow...nervous from incident!!
I'm a little nervous as I've only walked the route once...yesterday, I was on my part loan (Gabby) and the girl showing me the hack (Sophie) was walking her old pony (Pom) on a lead rope. Toward the end of the hack (final road) she jumps on Pom for a bareback ride home. Pom started trotting, so Gabby picks up trot. I think it's ok, it's the road, at least we're not going fast. Then I hear Sophie say "I actually can't stop, I can't stop him!" And BOOM, Pom breaks into a canter/gallop, and Gabby did NOT want to be left behind! I held back on giving her the rein until I saw some grass on the side of the road where we went from her ridiculously fast trot to canter. I know at the end of this road is a busy dual carriageway, so even though I feel secure in the saddle I'm worried we're going to get hit by a car!! Then ahead of me I see Sophie throw herself off Pom, into the dirt, get dragged for a little bit then stop, me and Gabby keep on going because she's so strong! I eventually get her to stop (by pulling her into a wooded area), both horses are fine, Sophie is fine, and we take them for a walk in the school for a cool down. I don't think Gabby would do that on her own, she was just following the pony, I really don't think she understood it wasn't supposed to happen!!
Luckily if I get lost I've been assured that Gabby definitely knows her way home!!
Does anybody have any tips? I have plenty of reflective gear and will be taking some water and a mobile phone :)
To ride or not to ride? ... What a stupid question!!
