help with stubborn gelding

5 days ago I took my gelding out for a ride after 7 months. Everything went fine. He cantered, trotted, and ran like a pro. 4 days later I saddled him up again and we walked about 1/2 mile and he justed stopped like his hooves were cemented into the ground. I gave him cues with no success. I then tried turning him around and that didn't work he just bent his neck. I then smacked him in the butt with the ends of the reins and still nothing. But when I turned to face him home then he did everything I asked of him. I then stopped turned him around the opposite way from home then his hooves were cemented again. So I got off and walked him forward. He was slow but I was able to move his feet. I continued to walk until I found an area I could use to lounge him. I lounged him for 15 mins and then returned into the saddle. I faced him away from home and still nothing. I then faced him home and he was more then willing to do anything I asked. I hate the thought of using spurs but is this the only option there is? He doesn't bite,kick, rear or backup. He just stops and doesn't take a step further. I know he is little buddy sour due to my past schedule. But now I have the time to ride more often and want to get him to go without using aggressive means. Any comments

In case of a planting, start flexing him and, when he moves willingly, encourage a step. Praise extensively, repeat, but don't overdo it - you won't be able to force him to move anyway, if you want to form and keep a willing attitude. There was a video posted here somewhere about this exact problem, it was really good, but I can't seem to find it anymore - maybe someone else will be of better help regarding this. :)

I tried flexing and praising. We actually sat there for 20 mins and he still refused to move. I refused to let him win so I compromised by walking him down the street away from home lounged him for 15 mins and tried again. Still nothing. Maybe I will have to do this a few times every week. Getting him off the property and away from my mare. Even if they means walking him. I just hate using spurs if I can help it

Well, sometimes more patience is needed that expected. But I'm not a pro and hopefully someone more experienced will chime in with some advice.

One more thing - has his health been checked?

It sounds to me like the horse is herd bound. He doesn't want to leave his buddies. You can try making the barn area (where he wants to be) the place he works-HARD, and away from the barn (where he doesn't want to go) the place he rests. Perhaps he will realize it is easier to go where you want then. You may find that you need to start with ground work, rather than jumping right back in the saddle. It is hardly fair to expect him to act like nothing has happened after 7 months, IMO.

LOL sounds like the first few times I took my mare out by myself! It was a battle of wills! It took 1 1/2 hours to go 1/3 of a mile, just to the corner. A neighbor drove by once, asked if I was having problems, I said nope, Spice and I are having a discussion over who's going to give in first! Then they drove by an hour later LOL they asked the same thing....said we were still discussing it! She would not go forward at all but would back short bits, eventually we finally made it to the corner and we had backed the whole way! Then she realized she was not where we had started and the look on her face.......after that we could go out and she did not test me......sometimes it takes alot longer than we want!

I agree a herd bound issue, our quarter pony would turn into a statue. I'm talkin spurs, whips, leads, nothin. She goes solid. We worked on it by letting her decide which way she wanted to go, then made her go the opposite. After a run, she'd hurry back towards trailer, made her go back to arena. She'd see her buddy at our trailer (who was left there for the same reason) we'd make her go till she couldn't see him. Took work. Three people the first time. Then just persistence. They wanna trot home,
Nope walk. Or we're going further away.

Horse is showing you it is boss.

And getting off and leading it is not the answer. Horse wins when you dismount.

Sit it out. No matter how long it takes. But don't pitch a battle, just sit.

Go out when you have time. Bring a book. Let him stand there as long as he wants. Ask every few minutes. You Can out wait him. When you get to where you want, give him a treat. After a few times, he will want that treat. Hope it helps!
