The horse I ride turns around to face me in a halt?

Sometimme during the lesson we have to halt while some people are cantering or doing a course. At this time I have to hold the horses reins because she doesn't like my instructor and will dance when she comes near. So during the halt, she will sometimes turn her head around and look at me. Why does she do that? Is it bad? How can I stop her from doing it?

Also, she always pulls down on the bit at the halt....always. When I think she stops she starts again. After a while she realizes she can't get away with it and will stop until the next halt. How can I stop her from doing this? Why is she doing it?

Thanks for the help!

Horses don't like people hanging onto their mouths. I believe you should only hold a contact when necessary for whatever reason you are riding. When you come in for a halt you probably go into "rest mode" with a more relaxed position, and the horse feels it but when she tries to have her head you won't let her.

When the horse is standing where you want her, let her have her head. If there is no contact she can't lean on the reins. If she moves correct and as soon as she is still let her have her head. There is nothing wrong with her moving her head - she's alive she's not meant to be still all the time.

She might move her head around because someone taught her to stand by turning her.

If you only ask for a still contact when necessary the horse is less likely to fight you. Remember you need legs seat and hands to be successful, just hands a halt can be confusing.
