I think i'm gonna go it alone!

I usually ride with someone. We have two horses and they seem a bit dependent on each other. Especially my husbands horse. If I take mine for walk, in hand. He is in a tizzy lather when we get back. Well anyway, I want to ride! And I am home alone. I am tempted to just go! Put dh's horse in the round pen and just go. I think it will do them some good. Any one else have this problem?? Oh and I do not have to get far from home, we live on a 400 acre ranch and can just stick around home.

It would be good for them to be appart. I try my hardest not to let any of my horses get buddy sour. So it you could do it every day it would be good for them.

It would do this horse a world of good to get away from his buddy for a bit and learn to depend on and trust you as a leader even when you are out alone. I would take him out and just ride, he will be reluctant to leave home at first but just keep encouraging him to go further. You may only be able to go a small distance at first but you will gradually be able to go farther and farther without him fighting you. Always make sure it is your idea to turn around and go home, if he is fighting you or trying to turn around keep him moving away. When you are ready to go home (and he is moving away willingly) stop him and turn him around when you ask don't just let him turn around.

Well, I went! We were going really well for quite awhile then he decides to turn around, wow! What a fight that was! Finally I got off and walked him where I wanted to go, then after a bit, mounted and off we went for a bit more, (this was not easy because he is almost 17hh but I did it! Re-mount I mean), anyway, just about when I was going to turn to come back he decides to turn around again! HOW DO THEY KNOW!!?? So of course I had to get him turned back around. So, then we head back a few minutes later and at a crossing in the road home I want to ride through the vineyard instead of the road which requires going away from home a bit to enter. Well, he would not have it! What a fight!!! Sooooooooooooo, I get off again, walk him up the road, into the vineyard and found a bucket to help me mount......... off we went, where "I" wanted to go, and around back home!!! We were out about an hour or so. I think all and all it was a good ride especially after getting back and reading your post about going further and further. So, I feel we did well. Thank you for your support. I do need to do this more often!!!!! Oh and the dog went too for the first time!!! Here are some pic's.

First heading out............... doing good....

After we re-mounted in the Vineyard.....going where I wanna go!!!

Great job! Keep at it and eventually you won't have to fight him at all. And try your hardest not to get off of him unless he is dangerous. I will never dismount my horse unless I am in danger because then my horse wins. I sometimes have to wait them out but eventually I get to where I want to go. And it gets better with every ride!

Pretty pretty horse. (What I can see)

Ok, thank you, that is good to know! I didn't think of it that way. To me I was still winning! He was round and round but I only got worried that he was going to rear once but I really go out of my way to make sure that does not happen. Don't want them to learn to do that!!!! Will wait it out next time!!
