last nights experience...

Last night I was goin to go for a little ride with some friends. I was getting my macie girl ready brushing, loving and trying new things while we waited. I didnt tack her up till they got there. I wanted to see if she would follow me around without a lead, she did! We were just having a good time. As soon as the other horses got there she tensed up and started getting antsy. I got her tacked up. My friend helped my cinch her.(still learning) I was positve it was to tight but they said no. Well I got up on her and she went a little crazy (not to bad) as I am learning to sit these things out and not fall off! I told them to go ahead without me. I calmed her down took her saddle off hopped on bareback and she was fine just walking around in the yard. I called today to start taking some formal lessons. It just makes me wonder if the problems were the cinch or the other horses or both?

Hard to say what was really bothering her, it could have been the saddle or it could have been her excited about the other horses and as soon as they were out of sight calmed down again. Someone else may have better insight.

But when it comes to tightening the cinch, you should be able to fit 2 fingers snuggly between the cinch and your horse's belly. Some people tighten it up more than that at first because they are expecting the horse to puff up and hold its breath a bit.

Some formal lessons will be a good idea, the more sources to learn from the better.

Two fingers is a good rule. I had a lady I was working for once tell me that I should be able to fit a fist in there, and any tighter was considered "Cowboy cinching" and would break the horses sternum... she was a bit overboard about everything though..

Anyways, if she calmed down after the horses left it could have just been excitement from being around them. After you started going bareback, did you keep riding with your friends? Was she still a little bit jiggy and excited? Have you had your saddle fit checked? I would eliminate things one at a time to get down to the source. :)

And good job on choosing lessons, its always better to learn from someone more experienced and willing to teach. :)

Gypsy gold does not chink and glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.
