Exclamation My gelding wont respond to my half halts! :(

Hi all, my very first post! So let me describe my situation to you:

My horse is of unknown breeding, a mongrel I guess you could say and is 14 years old. I live in West Virginia and have my own property, agistment and horses. I am a beginner (2 years of riding) but through the help of my husband (experienced rider and instructor) we have been working through my new life with horses quite well.

Anywho, I can walk, trot and canter fine and have been doing so for ages now almost everyday since, however, when it comes to the half halt to get Riddles (my boy), lower and on the bit (which he did with his previous owners perfectly fine), its as though he completely ignores my aids. Sometimes he will listen, and I reward him when he does by giving with the reins but sometimes and most of the time, he just flat out ignores me and rides with his head up high and out of a frame!

The aids I was taught for a half halt and to get a horse in frame is Inside leg and Outside Rein. I don't really want to hear other methods as I understand the concept of this perfectly and in theory it should be working not to mention this is how he was taught. It works perfectly for other horses but just not riddles (he was half halted like this before!)

So please, any help is appreciated!

Has your husband ridden him and been able to get him to half-halt?

Are you using your body in conjunction with your leg and hand? I believe your supposed to relax and slightly roll back your hips in the saddle like scooting a chair in?

Yeah, It's just me, he can get Riddles in a frame from start to finish....... Riddles does it sometimes with me, but I don't know what I'm doing differently when he does it compared to when he doesn't, so we don't know what I need to change!
