Bailey is an 8yr old QH mare I'm leasing. She has been off of work for two years but it feels like she has never had a break in her life. She is very close to being a finished barrel horse, she just needs some hauls and runs under her belt. She was used for Jr. Rodeo goat tying and only has one barrel run before (Won 2nd that dayI was told, incredibly) and she is a fast little devil and very sensitive. She likes to pull on the bit and is a little hot, but not uncontrollable and she has a good mind. She is also scared of things. A lot of things....But after a bit she gets over it. I would be gaming on her in a Sharon Camarillo Sweet Six bit with an O ring mouthpiece
Rebel is an 18yr old Anglo Arabian...Mr. Reliable but not excelling in anything in particular. Safe, sound, and sane. Hot headed like Bailey but still an all-around good boy. He is a nightmare in the snaffle but I can rein him in generally, and I would be riding him with either a D ring snaffle or a barrel mouthpiece curb (Which he does great in and is happiest with)
Jester is our dreamboy, but I will not be doing any riding with him because his show time has come to an end. I was thinking about using him as an inhand horse. Inhand Trail probably, but do you think it would be a better choice for me to do Showmanship? He doesn't really do haunch turns and I think I would do better with obstacles instead of cones, because I'm a visual person and I have never done good with Showmanship....Even though Trail would require more work for both of us to learn. He does everything in showmanship with the exception of haunch turns...And by "Doesn't do them" I mean he's not very good, and likes to walk out. But I'm not worried about teaching him as much as me remembering a bazillion patterns.
Here is the list of events:
Basically I am having issues choosing what gaing events to pattern for, which english events to do, and what equitation to do.
No jumping, no driving, nothing that involves a cattle chute (I'm not roper or dauber and my horses are scared of the chute anyway) team events will be decided later.
I'm wondering about trying Saddle Seat with Rebel. I would need to find a cutback saddle but that is fine, I can borrow one. The reason I was thinking this is because hardly anyone does it, and I can use my curb on him which he likes best. It would be my best bet for qualifying for state, and he does forehand turns like a dream but his haunch turns have always been stiff.
As for Bailey, Barrels for sure. Now I need to know if I should pattern for poles, or just do Figure 8 and pick some other gaming event, like flags or keyhole?
OHSET only allows 5 Individual Events and unlimited team events.
Right now, its looking like this:
- Saddle Seat
- Trail (Riding or inhand has yet to be decided....)
But I'm not sure what else would suit my horses more. I really want more gaming events, but I'm not wanting to make Bailey more hot than she already is. Do you think its worth risking her sanity to pattern for the other events before the meets?
OHSET isn't super competitive so even if I don't do too well, I still have a chance to state qualify, but I don't want to do something that's wrong for my horse.
Sorry for the novel, this is just something I've been pondering for awhile. Horse Sanity vs. What I want to do.
