Pull a really crazy face, laugh like a crazy person, or yell at them. Or alternate. If people try to tell me what to do with my horse I will usually stop dead and glare at them until they go away. Most of the horse world probably thinks I am clinically insane but hey, they don't tell me what to do anymore.

Me and my horse are eventers, showjumpers, dressage, and we have a crack at other bits and pieces when we feel like it, for fun. I've had an awful lot of people tell me I should put her in show hack classes. I have over time developed the response "sorry, she's got too much talent to waste her on that." It's a little harsher than I'd like (because they are usually in the discipline they are telling you to do) but it if they are really getting on your nerves... Not that I have anything against hacking, I just resent being told I HAVE to do it.

As for them saying you can't do barrelling with whatever else because it teaches them to run? Whatever. Look at eventing. all round athletes. There's an awful lot of flat out running in the cross country but there's sure as hell some great control and power left for the dressage and showjumping. Your horse is just... a western style eventer...
