I actually backed out of cantering on my last riding lesson and felt a little unsure of doing it at the time simply because my horse wasn't behaving herself to some degree but my sitting trot has improved massively. I hope you all had a great Christmas and I wish you a happy new year :)

Don't feel bad about it. You have to do it when it feels right for your horse. Your safety has to be paramount. My story is that at 5'4, I ride an 18.1hh Clydesdale. I was having a lesson in our sandschool (I ride english style) and got a lovely trot going. Couldn't get him in a canter because he is too big for the space and it wouldn't have been safe. However. My wonderful Clydesdale decided to teach me a lesson so I would never take him for granted. We finished our lesson and to cool him down and let him wind down we did 'walk' around the school then I crossed the school to change direction. He had other ideas and the sand was just so tempting. We got half way across and the little blighter decided that he wanted to roll...I was still on his back. Just mananged to jump off him in time otherwise I would havebeen crushed while he had his fun. I never, ever take him for granted now and if he is not int he mood to do something, I don't risk it...LOL

    Take your time, for sure!
I can confidently canter, but some horses I feel are a bit harder for me to control so I practice more on horses I am confident on, until I can say " I can do this!"

It's taken me about six months before I can semi canter bareback, and stirrupless in geeral. : p
