I mentioned to someone today that I would love to have someone give me a lesson on a lunge line so I could really relax and work on my seat -- maybe even with eyes closed. I could see this person was not particularly impressed. Their comment was, "I think it's better to learn without things that can potentially become a crutch." What do you think of this theory?
working on a lunge line is great for building strenght & working on your position. it is so much easier to work on yourself when you dont have to focus on your horse & steering & all of that !
I think that it could be a great way to learn - so you can focus. Some teaching or learning tools could become a crutch but I think if you are aware of this it shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure that once you get the feel for it, you would go back to rideing without someone else there.
I disagree with what this person said. I wouldn't interpret practicing on a lounge line as being a crutch, just as long as you take what you need from it, build skills and move on to more elaborate exercises.
