Proper use of Ground Poles?

So, I've recently been given permission to ride and work with an Arabian mare whenever I please. I would love to turn her into my little dressage mare. She's been out of work for a little while and needs some good muscle development. I know that ground poles can be a fantastic tool for this when used properly. My biggest challenge is knowing how to correctly space the poles. Does anyone have tips for this? I would like to space a few trot poles to encourage her to reach out a little more, as currently her trot is more like a western jog than a proper english trot. She's about 14 hands or so... I'm not sure how much a difference that makes.

Start with lunging her over them so you can see how she is hitting them I would try 3 to 4 ft apart and then addjust them as you see how she travels over them. I like to do a pine wheel so that when I hit it at diffrent places it make them come in or go out. Just to develop thier eye and to keep them thinking. You can also elavate them slightly after she gets use to them.

3 ft apart that's what I was taught (my big step).

When I do trot poles with my 14.1 pony I usually space them " pole, 4 of my feet(going heel to toe) and pole".

Lol that sounds funny, hope you get the idea though

Great, thanks for all of the tips everyone! I'll be starting to introduce poles into our work soon. ^_^

Have fun! I'd also suggest not to use them straight but use 8 or 10 and make a turn (like 7 straight and then 2-3 when you have to turn). I found it to be pretty helpful too.
