Uhhh, this is a weird post! You want us to place a bet? Lol

With the only information you've given, I might guess the 9 year old would win. Probably has more wind.

i am going to have to say that it depends on if the standy is pacing or not. galloping is a much faster gait than pacing. but if you are both galloping then i really dont know.

I take it that it would be both horses galloping...
So I'm going to guess the younger horse that is in training for eventing. They will be younger and more in shape possibly.

But I've seen some really fast older horses so I could be wrong!
Have fun :)

I don't think the 4 year age difference between the horses will make much difference. It is more a matter of what your friend does with her horse in the time until the race.
If she gets him into shape, my money just might go on the standardbred.
If she doesn't get him in shape, the standy still might win. After all, he will recognize that it is a race, and just may push himself to win, hopefully not hurting himself in the process.
Have fun, and please be safe!

How big are the horses? I have a horse who is very fast for her size (15hh), but bigger horses will beat her if they are also fast. Also, some horses have never been taught to stretch out so will only gallop bunched up and lose speed that way. Another factor: how long is the race? An appy might have a quicker burst of speed at the beginning but the standardbred would be more likely to win the longer the race lasts.

When we gallop our horses the paint and QHs can out sprint some of the others, but after about a quarter mile they fade away. Now the paint with TB blood, he's fast and can keep going. The Arabs and TB types can run fast for the longest. But the Arabs are too small to win.

hmm, good question....
depends really like my TB is a retired racer but he sucked at it lol and your appy would probably beat him
was the STB succesful?
I think I would probably go for the STB though

Sorry this is slighty off topic.. but do the race people mind you using their track?
Did you have to ask I mean and pay something, or they just friends of friends
