Rescuing has turned out to be a real job

I haven't been on for a long time. A lot has changed. Animal control contacted us and we started taking in rescues. We just really got our hands full.
Two horses, a mare and a gelding, were being starved. There was hay and water just outside of their reach and the person would not feed them. Also dogs were tormenting them. Another mare, a young standard bred, went without feed for 8 days. The last 3 of those she got out and ran the streets of a town. She got cut above the eye, and on both front feet. Another mare 5 year old was going to be shot by a husband cause he was mad at the wife for buying her. Well, they are here.
The standard bred still has to be tied out. She is afraid of her own shadow, She has gained now about 75 pounds and her coat is starting to shine. She goes from the barn to a tie out. If you try to lunge her she will hit the end of that rope and drag you and fly back into the barn.
The other 2 are now pasture horses. The mare has gained over 300 pounds ( it took a year) and went from ears back and kicking to please love one me. The gelding really feels his oats. Now it is time to find homes for them. Going to be really picky on that.
We have 20 head and can't take any more. We do this all on our own and ask for no help. The worst part is the farrier bills.
They all are happy horses and we love each one.

    Welcome to the forum.

How about some pictures and a location for your rescues.

The rescues in our area get paid to take in horses. Sounds like you should maybe not take so many at a time???

Rescuing is a full time job.

I don't work through any organizations. Basically I hear about things through the grape vine, or people have heard about us and what we do (taking in unwanted horses) and we've seen a lot of terrible things.

It never fails to amaze me the condition of some of the horses I see. It is SUCH a rewarding feeling when they find their new homes though.

I am at full capacity right now and actually just took a call from a lady who can't afford hay to feed her horse. I don't know what to do, it's so hard when you cannot help.

I have such respect for people who rescue horses, it's far from being an easy thing.

My mum and aunt used to run an animal rescue centre before my aunty died and we had quite a few horses come through the doors. The way some of them had been treated made me ashamed to be human.

Though the animal rescue centre has now closed, we still get the odd call to help out with an animal.

Patches, I wish you all the very best with your rescuing. The world is a better place for people like you and Squeak

I just bought a new camera and will certainly take pictures and send them. We don't have too many, we just are full up. Each one gets a share of loving. The challenge is the job, the reward is when this horse comes to me as all the others have done.

Maybe Patches you can use this forum to help let people know of the great horses you have that need homes! I would love to keep them all, but I cannot. I set my limit at my 4 personal horses, and 2 fosters all the time. I can comfortably care for 6 horses and do it well. I have the land and time to care for more, but not the money to pay for hay and farrier and vet bills.
