I like bareback. Me and my pony are practicing solidifying the basics down - walk, stop, back, yield at the walk. I really like practicing bareback because Clem can really feel what I want and I feel like it transfers better in saddle (Mine is an Aussie so there's quite a bit between me and horse, it muffles the cues a bit).

And honestly I'm not confident at all speeds saddle wise yet! I'm god at a walk in the saddle, the trot and canter, and just the walk so far bareback.

Just updating you all, I rode bareback at a lope yesterday and finally perfected my form and ohmigosh I cannot begin to tell you all how wonderful it was! I got the rhythm spot-on and Tijuana seemed to like that a lot seeing as she responded to my cues a LOT quicker!

Riding bareback is fine if you have control. You said you didn't have control and that is a concern.

You said you now let her run freely, and that might be fun, but one day you might get into a situation where you need to stop and you can't. I'd hold off on the running until you get good control.

Try riding in the saddle without your stirrups for a while. You'll probably find that you don't tend to bounce as much.
