I have been riding for years, stopped for a few years to have my daughter and now I am back in the saddle again I am no way near as brave as I was! I totally agree with Saskia, you need a horse you feel safe on to learn and be able to have a go at using your aids without being scared of falling off.
If I were you I would definitely go back to the mare until I was confident with walk, trot and canter and find you're starting to get bored and would like more of a challenge!
Don't let what happened put you off, the feeling riding gives you is totally different to anything else :) keep us posted with what you do :)
