    Riding in evenings

Just wondering how people deal with getting dark early... Do you still ride when it's dark? The arena I'm using (my neighbor's one) doesn't have any light, so I'm trying to figure out what can be done to still ride (even 20-30 mins/day).

Girl this is what I did...i got a shop light and an extention cord. I rigged it up to where I had some light to work with and no worries about running a battery down...good luck!

He-he... I thought about it last year, but the arena is way too far from my house (and I don't feel comfortable to ask to use my neighbor's outlet)... I ended up putting lights I got on my barn (so it's really light to muck at nights when I'm running home too late).

Is there any type of battery I can carry on arena and attached the lights to? I couldn't find any in Home Depot and places like that...

That's actually a great idea! How much did that set you back cost-wise? Can you rig that kind of thing up even in the snow?

Our outdoor arena has one light, but it only partially lights half of the arena. I can see ok, and I'm glad horses have better night vision than we do.

I don't ride in an arena, but on the road and on trails... When I want to ride after school and it gets dark so early, I'll get home from school, not even enter the house but yell that I'm goin riding and grab either my mares bridle or halter and just put it on her and ride bareback on the road until dark... I like being back home by dark if I'm on the road, but if I'm riding in the pasture, I can ride as late as I want.

Just wondering, why can't you ride in the arena at night? The nights aren't that dark... and it's actually pretty fun.

I'd say it's pretty dark. Yes, some nights are nice, but I'd say half time nights are really dark (I have a bad time to get to the barn sometime).

I thought about generator too, but all we have around is really big ones.. :)

I don't worry about the dark... I worry about freezing my butt off at night, it gets pretty cold once that sun goes down

Don't worry about the fact that you can't see, your horse still sees fine because they have excellent night vision. If you trust your horse to lead the way then there should be no problems with riding in the dark. I do that all the time and I love sitting a walk staring up at the stars. I usually can't see anything else!

Full moon rides! One of my favorite things to do (all year round) is go on full moon rides. Usually we have a bonfire going at the farm and some friends hanging out, and we ride and race around and play rowdy on the trails until the sun comes up. When you get tired or cold you go back and take a break and hang out around the fire. :)
