Riding my appaloosa

I got my appaloosa horse, Reggie, about 6 months ago, he is a good horse but I have had problems staying on him and staying balanced especially when I am running/loping on him. I ride with a western saddle and when I run with him I always have to take the reins in one hand and hang on to the horn with my other hand and still I feel very unsteady. He seems to be a sort of 'narrow' and thin/bony horse but I do feed him well, I think that might just be the way he is. Does anyone have any tips for me on how to feel more comfortable and steady when loping?

Thanks for any help!
