So I rode a gaited horse for the first time

There's a Kentucky Mountain Horse at our barn and my trainer let me ride him. Once he stopped sassing me, it was pretty fun! It was just walking and trotting (He's super out of shape and I'm pretty sure he'd fall flat on his face if I asked him to canter)

Anyway, I asked him to trot and then he started gaiting (I guess it's walk-gait- trot? IDK, my barn is an Arab barn).

But yes. He gaited and it felt so weird but in a good way. My brain was like 'this should be super bumpy' but it was really smooth :3:

I clearly have no idea what I'm doing

And now I'm sore and everything hurts and I regret nothing.

My mom bought a rocky mountain horse - and if she has to buy another horse for some reason for herself, you bet your pennies it will be a gaited horse. My mom doesn't lope on him often, so I get to have all the fun and work him out at a lope. And man, if there was a race for gaited horses or any other horse (probably other than TB) I bet he would win because when I race with my friends to the other side of the arena on Chocky, he is to the other side while everyone else hasn't reached the halfway point yet!

    But gaited horses are pretty.
The rocky mountain gaits are walk, trail walk, show gait, pleasure gait, lope.
But they call it differently for each breed, I couldn't find anywhere that said anything about the names of your breeds' gaits.

    Yay! Another convert!
It's a lateral ambling movement often called singlefooting, or stepping pace (depending on the timing of footfalls.)
Most gaited breeds when doing their gaits are every bit as smooth as the one you rode. Maybe even smoother... since you said he was super out of shape. It takes a little bit to get used to but once you do, it's nice to not have to post if you ride english, or bounce a little if you ride western.

I used to keep a friends gaited Paso in shape. I'm sure if I let myself I'd have plenty horse Cadillacs of my own. They are like butter I just love it.

    first time, gaited horse
