My mare refuses to go past a trot, kicking does nothing expect make her buck and turn around and bite my legs. Its even difficult to get her into a trot. I have tried to use a crop but once she gets going she will randomly stop and i will go flying. Also she refuses to go where I tell her if I to go turn she will go straight to the barn or to wherever she wants to go. although she knows whos boss on the ground.
Mare could have something going on internally too. Peritonitis will cause this, but also poor saddle fit, bad hands or a rider who bounces around in saddle. A rider that has heavy hands, or bouncing hands will keep many horses from wanting to go faster than walk.
I would also wonder if mare really is respecting you on ground, it may be that you are not reading her right.
You may also have saddle too far forwards and that is pinching her shoulders.
Well... I thought my boy was being lazy, which at first, he was. But then I began to move my hands alot and made it impossible for him to gain speed. So, it could be a rider fault. A trainer, video clip of you riding, a experienced rider, or maybe even you can determine if this is the cause or not. It's possible that a injury or internal problems could be effecting her, so if things continue, I'd get a vet check. Tack pinching or rubbing (poor fit) could made her feel uncomfortable when moving faster. A saddle fitter, or a trainer would be able to check this. Anddd of course, it could just be her being rude. If she's young, it could just be inexperience... I'd think a trainer/instuctor would do no harm They ALWAYS seem to fix my issues... Well my equine ones at least.. Lol
Ditto, ditto ,ditto to Palomine. Get this horse checked, and then start working with her on the ground. Sounds like you may need a trainer or someone more experienced to teach you what a respectful horse acts like.
