What do you wear when you ride in winter? I'm pretty tired of 5 different layers making me look 300 lbs LOL. Usually I'll wear a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, coat, sweatpants under jeans, 3 pair of socks, and cowboy boots.
i ride english, so fleece breeches are godly hahaha i don't get cold too easily. but i found that a fleece sweatshirt under a normal sweatshirt keeps me pretty toasty. As far as feet go, i need to invest in some winter riding boots, as thermal socks lie :P hahaha
I don't get cold too easily, but I wear long underwear under jeans most of the time. If i don't wear that, I wear sweatpants over jeans. That probably seems backwards and awkward but it's CRAZY warm. it keeps all of the heat in. it's fantastic.
then I just wear a T-shirt, a columbia fleece zip-up and a jacket.
then I have a carhart hat.
and I found these fantastic mitten things at fleet farm that just cover the palm of your hand so you don't get the bulk of multiple pairs of gloves and you can just wear a thin pair of gloves(like the magic stretch ones) and then put these over it and you don't feel like you have monster hands AND your hands stay warm.
I also am in love with my carhart wool socks. they are pricey but they work SO well and keep your toes warm.
I usually wear under amour with fleece lined, winter breeches on top and then an under amour long sleeve top with a t-shirt on top. I stick a fleece on top of that and then a big jacket. I also wear ariat winter paddock boots and I put regular half chaps over those. And of course, winter riding gloves. They keep my hands warm without being too bulky It's still in the low 30's here so I usually have take of the top jacket or I start to sweat... It's actually mostly been the wind that's bad, but it's been calm the last few days.
When it get really cold I have coveralls, which I can and will ride in.
I wear jeans and windpants over that. Normally I don't get cold feet but I can't wear my warm boots so now I'm trying to find decent but not too expensive riding boots. I ride western. I also sweat under too much crap. If I'm out feeding I wear a shirt, sweatshirt, and coveralls. The only thing that gets cold is my hands.
I end up taking my jacket off cuz I get too hot. Posted via Mobile Device
Well it doesn't get that cold here and winter is actually better to ride in lol
Much rather winter now then this high 38 degrees celcius we had to day, walk outside in shorts and singlet don't even think about riding haha
Aaaah shut up! Just kidding Red! You know I would rather be there than here! What is the degrees in Aussie compared to here in Wisconsin? It actually hasn't been too bad. Though I can't say its a heat wave. Just better than freezing Posted via Mobile Device
i wear just jeans or jeans with under armour underneath. on top i wear a long sleeve shirt, hoodie, and a coat. then i take the coat off to ride. i usually dont ride in gloves unless its REALLY cold because i hate them !
- Mountain Horse Under Armor. Pants and Top
- Kerrits Winter Riding Pull On Tights or my Cotton Natural Winter Riding Tights
- Regular Knee High Socs
- Mountain Horse Rim Frost Tall Boots
- Fleece Pull Over, or Hoodie Sweater or my Danskin Zip Up Fleece
- Heritage Winter Riding Gloves
Winter breeches, winter gloves, usually two long sleeves and a wool vest, then regular socks and boots. My feet freeze.
I think I'm going to try to get some Mountain Horse tall boots before next winter. I also want a head/ear warmer to wear under my helmet. Posted via Mobile Device
I have some fleece lined jeans that are amazing for cold weather... and I wear a nice thick coat, and mittens with the 'flip top' so I don't have to take the gloves off to bridle or cinch up. I have a good heavy pair of hiking boots that keep my feet cozy warm, as well, along with a hat, and a scarf...
Tights
Leggings
Riding pants (tha same ones as in my avi)
and skiing socks
2 tanktops
a thin hoodie
a thicker hoodie
and nice warm jacket
and I also wear sweat pants when I'm going to the stables since I have to take the bus. And I also change into really warm Timbaland boots which I only normal socks with.
And I have thick gloves that I wear when we warm up, but when we start jumping I put on my normal gloves which I keep in my hoodie pockets to keep warm.
Don't wear too many socks people! It just makes it worse. Rather wear nice thick ones with normal ones.
Tights under my breeches, snowboarding socks, a tank top, 2 thermal shirts, a flannel with a thermal layer inside, a hooded sweatshirt, warm riding gloves, and I finish it off with a down vest. I just got the Mountain Horse Rimfrost boots for Christmas and am looking forward to using them at my next lesson.
Just an FYI for anyone that might want to know- You should avoid wearing cotton socks in cold weather if you have problems with your feet being cold. Cotton absorbs the moisture from your feet when you sweat and will make your feet more cold.

Being too warm is also just as bad as being too cold. If you sweat when you ride during the winter, you should invest in clothing that has sweat wicking abilities. It will help (but not keep you completely) warm.
I'm pretty tolerant of cold, especially once my blood gets flowing. I usually wear:
Underarmour with collar
A tshirt over that
A hoody with a zipper (in case I want to take it off)
Slightly thick riding socks (as opposed to my thin Ovation Zocks)
And I wear a rainjacket lined with this awesome fuzz in the barn
Cotton Naturals riding pants. Those things are magic. I wear them in the summer AND winter.
I just take my feet out of my stirrups and roll my ankles to prevent a loss of circulation and cold feet.
Depending on just how cold it is, my wardrobe changes. At the coldest around -20 with the wind chill or colder (because it gets colder than that lol) I wear a T-shirt,(sometimes a tank top under that) a sweater/hoodie, a winter coat and a scarf, tucked in so I don't die :P. For legs, a pair of jeans or riding pants. if it's freezing or I'm going trial riding, long johns under that. Winter socks, winter boots, winter gloves. Once I get going, I usually get warm though!
-Those bands that go around your ears
-Underamour
-sweatshirt
-coat
-winter riding pants
-riding socks
-wool socks
-winter riding boots
-thicker riding gloves
I normally end up taking off my coat while Im riding though..
