    What kind of bit?

We are going to aquire our first pony soon. She's a 15yr old Shetland mare calm and easy going. She needs refreshed in riding been awhile is what I was told.I was thinking a straight snaffle?? Would size 5 inch be to big? Any recommendations would be great! I'm looking at horse.com for what I need because they seem to be the cheapest. Thanks for any help!

Yes, a straight snaffle or a simple jointed one. I would make sure the bars are skinnier, as a pony's mouth is smaller than a horse's, and most pony bits are in 4" range instead of 5". You can measure what size bit you need by taking a string and marking one side, then run it through the pony's mouth and mark the other side. They say the bit needs to stick out at least an 1/8 inch from his mouth to avoid piniching. =)

I always use double jointed snaffles such as the KK training. Its always good to ask the previous owner what they used though.

Please be sure to use one the correct size and NOT to big. I understand that if it is too long (extending beyond the sides of the mouth) that the pressure from the headstall alone will cause the mouthpiece to be pointed (at the joint) and dig into the roof of the mouth.
