Why would a young country girl ride with two horses?

Probably not a typical post, but I really need to know something. What would a girl of about 15, on a poor farm, at midday, be doing a short distance from the stables riding a horse and having another in tow. I'm writing a book and I have some ideas, but I don't want to sound like an idiot nor do I want good horse people to drop my book in the 2nd chapter because it doesn't make sense. I'm sure that happens all the time in film and literature and I don't want to be one of those. She ends up running into someone that needs help and she takes the 2nd horse and gives up the one she was riding to the stranger and takes them out of a storm into a barn. Nice girl right? Well what was she doing with an extra horse? Thank you!

She was ponying the second horse. Since you can only ride one horse at time, and you have two horses to exercise (or a 2nd horse to train), you can take the second horse along with you ... it's called "ponying".

If the horse had tack on, maybe she was riding over to her friends house so they could go for a ride.

Unless it was well-trained enough to be able to just be hopped on bareback and ridden with a halter and leadrope.

Bringing them in our out for the day/night. Ponying one so she didn't have to make two trips out to the pasture.

One horse could have an injury he was recovering from, so she was giving him exercise by leading him if he wasn't better enough yet to support a person's weight.

She could be riding her experienced horse to help an inexperienced horse to give it confidence.
She could be riding from her pasture back to the barn.
She could be running away and taking her horses with her.
