We live in Manitoba, so unless someone lives in Nunavut, it doesn't usually get much colder then the temps we endure We ride literally all winter. I couldn't stand the idea of not being around ponies just because of a little wind chill. We have no arena, just the front yard and open fields. We wear many layers and the horses are ridden all winter. Bareback is almost a must though, it keeps you WAY warmer when it gets frigid.

Our horses live outside, so we just make it a point to never get them sweaty. Other then that, we do all the normal things we do in summer, save for jumping of course.

Puck's getting his snow shoes tomorrow. I finally can go above a walk again!!

OP, you can teach leg yeild, shoulder-in and hanches-in at the walk too.

Whats Riding without Winter? I love to ride in the winter! This is the first winter that me and Raven have had together! And honestly she is a tack she goes thru ANYTHING!! I pretty much just hop on her and ride all over the yard! Make trails, and just pretty much have fun!!

I just recieved my first horse a couple of months ago and have rode him in -25 celcius(plus a -10 windchill feeling like -35)quite a few times. I only ride him bareback, to keep my core warm. I use my snowmobiling gear, jacket, snowpants, -100 sorel boots, and big leather mitts. A good balaclava goes a long way keeping your chest, neck, face and head warm, plus a touque to topit off. I wont get his sweaty, but just a nice walk throught the fields where there is no ice. I don't feel the cold while im on him, I just enjoy it soo much and after I dismount , weirdly enough I am usually sweating. Having winter here for 5 months out of the year we get used to it and learn what to wear. Spend money on good cold weather outer wear as the new technology is amazing, its so thin and movable, yet still so warm. I am getting a bareback pad just to keep my from slipping off, I am fairly balaced but when you mix snow pants with a fur coat it acts like a water slide.

^ Ya, I've invested in riding snowpants, winter boots, and a headband that's meant to fit under your helmet.
