worst day ever! 2 people fell off my horse

Ok so today was horrible. I decided to go for a ride, got out there he was being so good tacked him up and rode him down to my friends paddock and he didnt put a foot wrong which I was very impressed on. Took him into the smaller arena went for a little trot and he was very good, did test me out but I always expect that from him. So my friend and I went for a ride through the aggistment to where the gate is on the other side. We got to it, rode through and went on walking around the arena warming the horses up. About 10 minutes into it I was walking muss and it was a flat surface and he tripped over air, his feet or both(not entirely sure which) and went right down, and all I thought was that he was going to flip over ontop of me but he hit the ground and staggered up but id lost my stirrup and my reins and had slipped off the side but was holding on and he panicked and started trotting and I knew if I held on he would have just freaked and gone faster so I dropped hit the ground with a real thud to the head. So glad I ride with a helmet because even with the helmet on I've defiently hurt my head though I don't think im concussed or anything(fingers crossed) but anyway so I just laid there for a few mins, muss settled and stopped and my mum caught him and was freaking out because well yeh im her daughter and was asking me how my back is coz I have metal rods in there. From what I've found so far I have a lot of scrapes and soon to be bruises, I stabbed myself with the pommel bit of the saddle in the gut so its extremely sore and going to bruise bad, my finger is fully swollen possibly broken or dislocated not sure, my heads throbbing and my backs quite sore. Though my gut and heads probably worse off. But that's not the worse thing that happened. I got up, got back on muss and walked around a bit, did some trotting, took him over some poles on the ground and I felt this weird feeling and my friend, an experience rider, I asked him if he could jump on muss as sometimes he's gotten on for me and he said sure and offered to take him for a canter. So I said sure that wuold be great and held his horse for him and he trotted muss around and muss was doing great, looks calm relaxed and then shaun asked for him to canter and that's when everything happened all at once. Muss went from calm and relaxed to a bucking bronco/ hopping kangaroo. Shaun was off in seconds and he hit the ground hard and was groaning so loud we were looking for a phone to ring an ambulance I was freaking out and I still feel so awful that he got hurt. I've never seen him do anything like tthat. He got up and said he was okay abit sore and had blood in his mouth but he said he was okay and got back on his horse but I felt so horrible about what muss did and that i'd asked him to get on and I took muss back to the other arena, tok him to the round yard and got on just walked him around for a few minutes to show it wasnt going to get him outta it and then I got off took his gear off and free lunged him at a trot. So now i've gotta make a decision: get a trainer to help me with him, which I've found one whos helped me with him before and I really liked, or sell him, find something older, more experience and smaller. So now I really gotta try and decide and my mum is on the verge of selling him. He's a good boy but today has really shocked me and I don't know what to do. I don't blame him at all for my fall, well I mean he coulda picked up his legs and not been such a silly boy, but it was an accident and he didnt intentionally hurt me. But he intentionally kangaroo hopped with my mate shaun and shauns about 30 and knows what he's doing and im 17 have only a 3 years experience and not with young horses and im only small so I really don't know what to do. Its between getting the trainer to help me or to sell him find something quieter to get my confidence back on.

I am sorry to hear this. I took a terrible fall from my girl too recently. Hope you're feeling better soon.

As for what you should do, I can't answer that as I have no idea what got in to your guy. If you really are connected with him, why not try a trainer for a bit and see what is going on? If not or you don't feel that inclined to do that, then maybe selling him to someone who has more experience and can handle him would be wise.

Good luck with your decision.

MY first thought is... how well did you check him over after he tripped? It's possible the tripping was a fluke but he may have hurt himself on the way down. Or maybe even the bit hit him wrong when you were holding on.
Then your friend gets on, and maybe it was a pain issue. I'm sorry to hear that you both got hurt, but very glad to hear yuo were wearing your helmet.

It doesnt sound like a trainer is needed if this was just a first time offense. Sounds like it was just a bad day.

Its my first fall on him but he's so unpredicatble im just losing all my confidence with him. We have so many bad days and only a few good and he's always had trouble cantering, I've been told its because he's only 6 and he has bucked before so its not really his first offence. He's gone through 3 electric fences and a barbed wire because he was scared once so right now I honeslty don't know what to do. My mum wants to sell him coz she's scared for me and told me to start looking at other horses for sale. He's had two trainers out before and he did benefit from them very well but they never got on him, only worked on the ground with him and so noones ever helped me in the saddle or anything. I honestly don't know what to do. I havent been confident even trying to canter him because of what he does, now he's hurt someone else because it was my stupid fault for asking them to get on and im scared to even let anyone on him except for me, I was talking to my trainer and he said hed work with him, do all the ground work, then get in the saddle and hed take the risk but im not sure if I could bare watching him try and canter him that's how horrible it was this afternoon

And he didnt look saw, he was trotting happily and showed no obvious signs of soreness or uncomfortable. The bit may have hit him, but he didnt seem sensitive at all in the face and when I did some walks and stops he did them with no issues

Has a vet looked at him? He might have some sort of issue if he's having trouble cantering and he's tripping. Maybe that would help? I don't know. Just too many variables that we can't see. And there are so many that could have happened that day. I just wish you all good luck.

SELL. If you are loosing your confidence and he has a history of being unpredictable/bucking, sell and find something fun that wont get you hurt.

Atm im thinking yes, it may be time to try and sell him and find something quieter. I really do wish sometimes I had a horse I could just have some fun on, actually go for a nice relaxing canter on, go for a walk around the property by myself without him having a breakdown. Maybe I'm saying this because im so sore today and feeling sorry for myself and ill be fine in a day or two, I don't know. But at the moment im looking through horses for sale and my honest thuoghts are 'why can't I have a horse like that'' 'why can't muss be that quiet and calm' he's only 6 I know but I just don't think he's right for me.

He sounds like he wasn't comfortable being cantered. When was he last cantered?

My horse was like this for my friend. W/T perfect. Canter? He spooked on her when she lost a stirrup (after I told her that was enough cantering...) and he took off at a bolt, she flew off and hit the bottom of the arena gate and he's been a handful at the canter since.

She didn't get back on, I did. And I schooled that monkey at the canter until we were calm and together (and I've only just learned it.. so it wasn't pretty!)

Green horse (or one coming back from rehab) is not a good candidate for a canter. In future (not scolding you, offering advice) end on a good note. Don't get to that good note and think "oh we can do better than this!" and push it too far.

I think you need to look at lessons, and put him into some sort of training UNDERSADDLE (on the ground is great, but like you said the problems are undersaddle.) I think he just needs miles.. lots of miles with a confident rider (you'll get there sweetie.. it takes time.)

I wouldn't jump to selling him right away since he's been through quite the ordeal and he seems out of his element.

But your safety is important, and you need that confidence. It's really easy to think "omg he's going to freak out!" or amidst the freaking out feel like it's all over and you're doing to die.. you have to change your perspective. Be in control of the situation. When my horse bolts I refuse to show him I'm scared. I get stern and I make his antics stop NOW.

Give yourself a few days to cool out, don't think about the fall or him. Talk with some barns nearby and see if you can at least get some confidence back.

Okay? :)

Thankyou I think he is having trouble with it and he hasnt been cantered for quite a while now and yes he's defiently green. I find it frustrating as I'm pretty sure my friend, who owned him only sold him to me to get rid of him. She sold me a saddle that didnt fit him, she said she's do some more work on him for me which they never did so I ended up with the green broke horse who is extremely confused about things. Its my fault, I know but sometimes I just wish they could have actually done what they said they would. The only pony club that I could ride at here will refuse to let me ride as they are scared if I fall off I will break the rods in my back and sue them so they kicked me out last year and I got a horse. He was amazing and he was so quiet and he still is quiet but everything I want to do I can't do because he doesnt know how to do it and I don't know how to teach him how to do it.
