Worst fall yesterday - spending the day in bed

Had a pretty "epic" fall, as my sister put it. I'm working on changing canter leads up the long diagonal and I manage just fine up until the actual canter-trot-canter transition. I fell after changing the lead because I lost my balance after *attempting* to sit the trot before transitioning to cantering. Roy is 16.2hh and I'm only 5"3 so needless to say it was quite a long way to fall. My right buttock, hip, lower back and ribs took the fall and I hit my head as well.

My bum, lower back and ribs are KILLING ME. I'm spending the day in bed just to be comfortable. I woke myself up at 6:30 this morning because I was turning myself and it hurt so bad. I have no visible bruising but my mum reckons it's probably internal.

This is the worst fall I've had. The twisted thing? I'm itching to get back into the saddle and I did the exact same transition after I got back on after my fall.

/woe is me whinge

Any advice to help the aching body? :P

Ugh sorry to hear about your tumble. You will probably be more sore when you wake up today. Try taking a few painkillers and having a hot bath.

Bummer I hate those kinds of falls. My suggestion (i'm not a pill person) is to get up get out of the PJs and go for a walk. It will release endorphins and get the blood flowing and your day started. You will be out of bed and slightly more distracted than lying in bed rolling around going "it hurts".

I would also do a quick examination to make sure I didn't break something. Follow each rib, does it feel normal, does it hurt, dip down, stick out a little further? Push down on both sides of the rib cage does anything hurt? Take a deep breath. Abdomen, imagen a "+" sign that goes through your belly button. Push down and release in each quaderant (upper left, upper right, etc) does anything hurt, is it tender, is it harder than the other quadrents, is anything different. Visually inspect everything use a mirror. Any bruising, redness, swelling, cuts, abrasions? Have you been sick to your stomach? Thrown up? If so was their blood? How about the other end, blood in urine? Blood in the fecal matter presents it's self as redish looking like blood, or it could look dark and tar like. If it is dark and tar like it is damage further up your digestive system. All of this is signs of not just being sore and if any of this presents you should see a doctor just to get it checked out. Except maybe the abrasions or small bruise. The best preventative measure is to know your body and what is normal.

Wow, my last post seemed really cold. Sorry, that's just the first thing that runs through my head Is the scene safe? Body substance isolations, level of conciousness, mechanism of injury, chief complaint, airway? Breathing? Serculations? Assesment.....

How was the horse after the fall? I had a horse that was always a holy terror after anyone fell. If someone fell and couldn't handle her I would pull them down and get up there and ride her till she was dead tired. Then they would get back up and essentially cool her down. Only took her a few times to get it. Did he stop and wait or go cantering around the arena singing "free at last" hope you feel better, and good luck with the transition.

Ouch! Glad it was minor injuries! I had a doozy a couple weeks ago, first time actually getting dumped in years. Certainly don't bounce like I did as a kid lol!

Nice hot bath with epsom salts and keep moving. Laying in bed all day will only make you more stiff and sore when you do try to get back up and at it.

I'm feeling heaps better today. My ribs and lower back aren't so sore (except when I get up and down off the chair) but my right buttock is still rather sore :P I felt fairly sick in the stomach yesterday but nothing a good feed couldn't fix. I'm still surprised that my right side isn't black and blue. I have two small bruises on my arm but nowhere else. Then again my innards are probably a nice spectrum of colours :P

Thanks for the concern, THN. You didn't sound cold at all! Roy is a lesson horse and he was hunky dory when I left. He rubbed his head against me as I was untacking him but that's it. My sister was filming my lesson for me but sadly I was out of shot when I fell. But the sound of 70 odd kilos hitting the dirt was quite evident :P

I'm so, so glad I didn't break anything! My family aren't horsey at all (my sister was adamant that Roy was going to kill her :P) but I think they've all realised it's to as easy as it looks lol

Sounds nearly identical to a fall I took... about a week after the fall, a bruise appeared on my hip that was as black as could be. The color faded quickly, the ouchies did not... but, I learned :) Good job getting back up! You'll feel good enough to ride in a few days, especially as motivated as you sound :)
