You can do a couple things. First try taking the strap off by taking off both conchos. The join the chaps together in the back by using just one concho and not using the strap. If that doesn't work you will need to punch a couple of holes in the strap to help pull together in the back. You shouldn't need to cut the leather... If you are going to move the conchos, I would make sure that you measure for hole placement on both sides, just to make sure it stays even. You should also plan to put a few extra holes in the front (where you do the chaps up), just so you have some extra room.
