Hunter Show Clothing

So, my OTTB and I will be in our first show in late September. He will be in a pleasure hunter class. I have black Mountain Horse dress boots and a black velvet hat already, but I need the rest! My quetions are:

-- Is it ok if the breeches are ribbed? I have a pair of black IRIDEON breeches with knee patches, the material isnt smooth, its ribbed. I want to get the same thing in tan, but is that permissible in the show ring?

-- Is it true you must wear a belt?

-- Can the breeches be tan, or should they be lighter?

-- I havent decided on a coat yet.

-- Can I carry a dressage whip in a hunter class? Or do I need a regular crop?

Thanks for any advice!

Tan breeches are the most common in my area. I've never seen anyone wear white in a HJ class... Is this a schooling show or a rated show? If it is just a schooling show, you might be able to get away with not wearing a jacket. (I have ridden in a black Under Armour shirt and a black vest for schooling shows) A belt just makes you look "tidier". Your best bet is to ask your coach though what is acceptable for you to wear. Some areas do not allow crops in a flat class, so you will need to check with your coach on that.

If you are doing a schooling show, just make sure whatever you wear is clean, jacket is pressed and everything fits. A tidy appearance will go a lot farther with the judge them an unkempt but "color correct" appearance.

If you plan on doing more shows invest in a good quality jacket, something by Pytchley, Grand Prix, RJ Classics. You can try some new ones on at the store, note the size and colors you like, then check eBay and consignment stores. It's better to buy one size up and tailor it down then buy a jacket that is too small.

A Navy jacket will always be in style. As will white shirts. Colored shirts go in and out of style, depending on the color. Essex Coolmax shirts are great for summer showing. Buy a long sleeve shirt because sweating on your jacket is just kinda really gross and not good for your jacket.

I wouldn't carry a Dressage whip. Make sure your crop is black.

Breeches should be "Tan" or "Green Beige". Each brand of breech fits differently so be sure to try on a lot and make sure to buy whatever flatters your form and feels comfortable to you. I wouldn't wear ribbed breeches and definitely not black. But as long as you are clean, and everything fits, if its a schooling show I've seen worse lol

If you wear a jacket they won't notice whether or not you are wearing a belt. A plain black or brown leather belt though is great to have and are inexpensive to get. I bought my first show belt at WalMart.

Like I said if you have time eBay, and always check consignment stores.

Gordon Wright once told a student to take up swimming because he would never be a good rider, that rider was George Morris.

void pretty much covered anything I would have said.

If the show follows USEF's rules, it is illegal to carry a whip over 28 inches (maybe it's 30... ?)

I agree with Void except the comment on the ribbed breeches. The small amount of texture a rib breech has is not something that will make an issue one way or the other.

If you plan to do rated shows then it probably best to go out and get some breeches that are more like what everyone else is wearing. For a schooling show ribbed breeches that fit appropriately will be fine.

Edit to add - unless ribbed breeches in this case means something different than I think it does. Instead of being a totally smooth fabric there is a slight texture.

LOL I said the ribbed breeches were fine for schooling. I was just stating that I personally wouldn't wear either ribbed nor black. Lol

I tried jackets at Dover over the weekend and found what fit best was Wellington size 10R.

I will try the website someone gave here to see if I can find one used.

Any thoughts on Wellington jackets?
