    If you're only starting out I'd suggest jodphur boots, they're cheaper
    Then if you don't like how they look with jodphurs and prefer the long boot look, buy some half chaps/gaiters to go over the top. Cheaper than long boots to start with, and then you can always get the long boots later if you want them to show or something.

    I'd advise checking out Mark Todd boots as they have a really wide range of style in their competition long boots - standard width, Extra wide, standard length, short fitting.....so cater for all shapes and sizes!
