Western Hats

So I just started showing and I need a hat. My trainer says that even though I have black chaps I should get a tan hat because tan is more sophisticated and judges like it. Now I'm new to all of this so I don't know but wouldn't a black hat look better with black chaps. Does the color of your hat really matter to the judges?
Thanks

depends on the season. White from memorial day to labor day, black from labor day to memorial day. And never where white straw after labor day, that's just uncouth.

That is old school Joe, that rule is now gone! While it's nice to have your hat match your chaps, it casts shadows on your face if you wear a dark hat. A light hat brightens & highlights your face.

Not tan, probably vanilla or a sand hat.

^ it goes with anything.

Personally I hate mixing black and brown.

I have two hats - a black felt and a vanilla felt. They go with anything and any season.

My next hat splurge is going to be a black/white straw hat.

Don't forget to get your hat shaped appropriately for your event. There is nothing more telling of a novice than a flat brim.

not gone, just people don't follow proper etiquette because they just don't know any better. Poor unwashed masses. Whatever happened to finishing schools ? Next thing you know people will be wearing black belts with silver buckles with brown boots.,

I think you should go with whatever you think looks snazziest on you and your horse, unless your goal is nationals! (In which case I'd listen to my trainer.) I ride with a black hat because I am silly pale and I typically brighten up my face with a fun, sophisticated shirt. Do what makes you feel rockin'!

What color is your shirt?

If nothing matches, or you have three different/distinct colors going on, it is going to break up your silhouette.
