Considering halter.....

I'm considering getting my TB into halter classes, and I just have one question....I've seen pleeenty of quarter horses in halter classes, so I know what they should look like, but what should the typical thoroughbred look like? My gelding is very typically thoroughbred, he was race bred, trained, and on the track for awhile, so he is well put together I just need to know what to aim for....kind of chunky and well built, like a quarter horse or what?

If it's an open class, you want your horse to look like the ideal of his breed, with as close to flawless conformation as possible. Thoroughbreds are built for speed and stamina, so you don't, for example, want your Thoroughbred to have short legs and be back at the knee.

What I mean is, should I aim for him to be a porker, have a nice round belly and big muscles, or should he be kept lean (obviously with fat on him) and a little more refined in muscle?

In people/wrestling terms terms....heavy weight or middle weight? Some Thoroughbreds I have seen have larger, more Warmblood/sporty type builds, while he has more Arab influence.

Because he is a TB, I would lean towards lean (no pun intended)

A discerning judge is going to want to view the frame of your horse and how he's put together for the job he was bred to do. If you chunk him up, he will lose that sleek TB look.

I prefer to see a halter horse in shape rather than fat.

Just my two cents worth.

Sometimes I wrestle with my demons. Sometimes we just snuggle.
