Horsegal, when you are moving toward the judge to set up for inspection, you put the horse on a path that would run over the judge if you didn't stop. In other words, the horse is looking at the judge. Just make sure you stop at LEAST an amr's length from the judge. Pro, that's correct.

A friend of mine just started showing this past year and she got so nervous for shows that she would forget this every time. She laughs about it now, but she would get right up to the judge and realize her horse was 2 feet to the judge's left side and she was directly in front of him or her. I think everyone's natural instinct is to walk yourself to the judge.....not for you to walk your horse to the judge. I always pick a spot about 2 feet to the judge's right and I walk towards that spot. That helps keep the line my horse is on nice and straight to the judge.

So when your squaring your horse up in front of the judge can you switch sides, or must you stay on the near side of your horse...Or are you standing using the quarter method?

You should point your horse's nose at the judge. No profile views. Try and watch the class before yours. Failing that, let someone else go before you so you can see what it's all about.

    Yes!!

Reyna and I won 1st in the showmanship, got 2 seconds; one in western pleasure, and one in horsemanship. Well, Reyna and I tied with another girl for first place in the horsemanship, so the judge came over and asked up how many beats in a back up...! I knew the answer, but the other girl had said it just a second before me. That's what broke the tie! She also won me $10.00 in the western pleasure!

As for the baby, her very first show and she placed 5th in the halter (out of 8 )!! The second time (showmanship) was a total mess! I felt so sorry for the guy next to us. We were in the 3 and under and his horse started to act off of mine.

I have to admit it was kinda funny. My horse would circle, then his horse would circle, and so on (literally throughout the WHOLE class!!)...Then they'd stand quiet for like 2 seconds and someones horse would whinny, then one of our would whinny then the other had to go see what was going on so then we had to circle....lol. What a mess that one was!

The lady who took me up to the show and has been helping me with my showmanship/halter said she was surprised I wasn't asked to leave the ring:)

Pam: I sent you an email:)
