Thats the show life for you !!! They jam the horse head in on their chest with big bits get a whip bash them to get them to stand and then work them around and around and around. Sure you feel sorry for them but it only matters about you and your horse and as long as you treat your horse well that's all that matters and that you have fun! You should get that pony. He would have a nice home. I show but I don't show for ribbions I show to have fun. Shows arent that bad if you and your pony have a good time regardless of placings

    Good luck

I used to let the local 4H hold shows and events at my place all the time, years ago. At one point two of the Uber-Moms (who happened to be sisters) decided to put on a mini rodeo. They planned all kinds of fun events, and even some contests for the "wee" kids so they could win prizes too. My kid was wee at the time. I worked my butt off for days to get the place set up and ready, and when they finally held their little show guess whose kids won all the prizes? It was sickening. My son was only about 4 and he entered all the contests, and won nothing- he cried his eyes out. I never held another event there again (in fact I quit horses altogether for a number of years because of people like that!)

People get lost and forget that horses are animals, and not vehicles you can win ribbons on. It's very sad. I find myself doing it sometimes, as I do use my horse for transportation to and from places sometimes. But in the end, I try my best to do well by my horses and treat them like living things. It's so sad to see things like what you saw. You should take her- bieng only 4, she needs to learn now that people and riding can be pleasant before it's too late and she starts developing behavioral problems.

That is horrible...but I hope you don't think of all IHSA shows that way. I show IHSA (I ride for the University of Kentucky) and all of our regional shows are well run with fantastic horses that are treated well. If any of the coaches or our regional president EVER saw anyone doing that to one of the horses, they would be kicked out before they could blink. We host one of the shows during the year as well as bring a few horses to the rest of the shows during the year if they need some more and our horses are ALWAYS first priority. This makes me really upset to hear that there was an IHSA show being run like that. The IHSA is supposed to promote horsemanship and sportsmanship. If someone high up in the IHSA heard about this there could be some serious consequences for that host school.

Its beyond me. I have heard a lot of nightmare stories like yours. But with horses taking off on people and rearing and craziness.

The point of not being able to ride the horse first is to test your actual riding skill and level the playing field. The IHSA wants every college student to be able to have the chance to ride and show, even if they don't have their own horse. They are always warmed up before the classes start by riders who aren't showing from the host school. What about people that catch ride for a living? They often get on a horse they have never ridden and show it at big shows. It is very much the same concept.

As for horses not being in the appropriate classes that is the fault and bad judgement of the coach from the host school as it is their decision what classes the horses are put in.

The IHSA isn't a bad program. Many Olympians once rode on an IHSA team when they were in college and it helped them secure a successful career path. This is not to say that all IHSA programs at every school are awesome, obviously some people don't embrace the idea of it and don't understand what it is all about.

Looking back, I sort of wish that I had tried to find out someone high up to email about my concerns... and not necessarily the region 'moderators' who were there. Granted, they didn't witness this particularly nasty episode... but it seemed like they were letting a fair bit slide.

It shocked me how many other people were there to witness this happening without protesting. I know that there were more people than just me who disapproved. Then again, I wonder if it might have helped for me to intervene with a sharp word.

I would have loved to be able to take on the pony, but the owner was asking $2000 for this grade unregistered 4 yr old pony who would have needed to be essentially restarted from scratch... I couldn't do it, even if she was cute as a button.

I would recomend emailing someone about it. That is just the kind of thing the association needs to hear about so it can be stopped.

Yeah... but I feel like it was long enough ago (January) that it isn't really relevant any more and it would be hard to actually do something about it. Not to mention, the team may have already self destructed... it was an unbelievable mess of drama and the school's budget has been massively cut, so it may not even be willing to help fund them.

Heh, the thing is... I don't actually want anything to do with these shows again. I suppose I could go with the intention of busting them if something like this happened again, but it would still be miserable for me.
