Needing tips for yearling halter/showmanship

Ive got a yearling I am starting out this year. This particular yearling has a very bad case of "happy feet" I had him at equine affair this spring with our breed club and he was in the ring for presentation. He does EXCELLENT at home.. stands still. Pivots.. trots off. And I work him daily.. even if just for a quick 10 minutes.

Equine affair was a different story! I know its a lot of NEW things but I've personally never shown such a young horse. I usually don't bring them out until they are 3 + and have never had to encounter these issues. Should I be taking him to local shows just for experience but don't enter him. Walk him around grounds?

Any tips?

If you are taking him to a schooling show, you might as well show him.

I do agree here! The more he gets out and gets used to it the better I think he will do! Helps you get used to showing him, and I would think he will place better and better as he does feel more comfortable. Eventually he will sweep the floor with the others. ;) I'd love to see pictures of him from the show!

**Edit, I do think just bringing him if it's a higher level show would help as well. He will get used to trailering and just the sights / sounds of a show and what to expect.

Thanks for the responses. Didnt know if this was common in yearlings. All the ones i've ever seen shown look almost "dead" to me... almost like they are tired or had been drugged? I dunno. I've never had a yearling stand still like they do in the ring. Perhaps mine are just misbehaved :) lol

Does he know how to lunge a little bit? Allowing him to kick up his heels will probably help. That and just taking him everywhere.

No, it's because they are trained that when the chain goes on they are at work. More work at home will do some good.
