Sensitive nose?

So im considering on doing a halter class with my Paint in APHA, he's pinked skin and when I put a chain on him he will act like it hurts and when I just barley touch the lead he will resond very fast to get out of the preasure. So my question is do you have to have a chain in it? Or can you show a different way?

Do you put the chain over his nose? I've seen chains be put underneath the jaw, have you tried that? If his nose is sunburnt I can see an issue with the chain being ontop but what about underneath?

Or you can do this...

I am not 100% sure, but I have never seen anyone compete with the chain going over the nose. Only time I have seen that was in halter classes showing stallions. You should show your horse with chain fed under the chin for showmanship as this is the norm.

Okay I always thought it was upper. But I always went to shows for games not halter.
