Tack & Apparel *Western*

I understand for western showmanship, the horse should be in a halter with a leather chain lead. How should the chain be set up? Also, for western, does the leather halter HAVE to have silver on it? Could it be a plain, clean leather one?

How about the handlers apparel? Is a collared, button up long sleeved shirt ok? Also, tucked in with a belt & buckle? And of course the cowboy hat.

One more thing... how should the horse's mane be for the western showmanship? Can it be long & its natural length? Does it have to be cut a certain style?

Haha... newbie here.

I think you and I are going to be good friends... LOL.

Anyway... I'm not sure what you mean about the chain. A leather halter is good, it doesn't have to have silver on it. As I explained earlier, some shows have different rules for chains and stuff, so you might want to check those out.

Yeah, that all sounds good. I've been to shows that also require a tie of some sort, but that's getting to be rarer now.

The most popular thing right now is cut about 5 inches long and banded, like this. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_i4fqoVzpzQ...0/HPIM1206.jpg

I don't do that because my horses are also reiners, and I like the long mane look. Sometimes I do this thing where you start banding like that and then continue down the mane, taking a half of each banded piece and putting that in a band... like this. I think it's called the Basketweave. http://www.haflingerhorses.com/marleeshow4.jpg it's really interesting and I get lots of compliments on it.

You can just leave it long and the natural length though, it's pretty much your choice. The "thing" right now is banded manes, and really long, full tails. Fake tails are really popular but luckily, my horses all have that look so I don't have to pay for those haha.

To rein a horse is not only to guide him,
but also to control his every movement.

If you are going to start your showmanship at local shows and county fairs, a good clean horse, tack and western apparel is great. No need to buy the fancy stuff, until you start winning and need it for bigger shows!
Make sure to wear the appropriate foot wear, check with your local shows, most like boots above the ankle. A proper fitting halter is more important that a silver laden one, any day. Leather is a must, but I have seen some beginners show in nylon, but you should not be judged on your tack ( sadly to say you will be at most shows).

The first and last thing to remember is to have fun. Be proud of yourself and your horse and it will all be a great time.

You stand on the left side of your horse and pass it through that first silver loop circle (can't think of it's term atm). Then (i've been told two ways) you can wrap it once around the chin strap through the hole/circle on the other side then clip the end of the chain to the ring up near the horses ear with the clip facing out away from the horses face. The other way is exactly the same accept you just pass the chain under the horses chin then through the hole/circle and up to the ring near the horses ear again. Does this make sence??
