Competition questions ( will start to compete )

Hi ummm my lease horses owner, said i should do competitions and if i dont like it after i have tried it i can stop. So i said i would start doing dressage only at first because i have memory problems (short term memory).

Here are my questions:
1. For dressage do i need a black helmut ? Can i wear a black cover over my helmet? Will i get points taken of for doing that ?
2. Before you do the dressage test can you get the test paper weeks in advance of the competetion ? Only because if i get the test on the day im screwed i have to put it into my long term memory to remember !
3. If i ride a 16.3 horse can i wear my RM williams black short boots, or my new Dublin black short boots ? Do i need chaps or gaitors ? Will i lose points if i dont have gaitors or chaps ?
4. I have to wear cream or white jodphurs right ?
5. Do i need a white collar long sleeve t shirt underneath a dressage jacket ?
6. Will i lose points on my appearance if i have all cheap apparell ?
7. What are the best ties to wear ? Do people wear ties ?

Umm i can just imagine my self going into the ring, starting and forgeting where i am going ! Ok so is there a time frame of how long you get to remember the course before it starts ? How long do course walks go for ? Can i wait till last to do my round ?

Cross country:
Do you have to remember the course ? Any thing i should know ?

For your first show you should be sure that you are going into the right level of competition. You should start off with a schooling show. Some place where you can learn what shows are like without all the competition of the bigger shows. Schooling level shows usually have very simple courses and tests. and they typically have different divisions for different level competitors.

For a schooling show a black helmet cover over your regular helmet should be fine. You will need to have tan breeches and half chaps to go with your paddock boots. Your shirt should be a long sleeved button down white shirt. At schooling level I believe a coat is optional. And as far as the price of your show clothes, that doesn't matter as long as they are clean, well fitting and in good condition. This goes for jumping as well.

Hope this helps!

You should look up your dressage associations rule book. It will lay out all the requirements for tack and clothing. At a schooling show for dressage I usually will just wear something black long sleeved and collared with tan breeches, paddock boots and half chaps. And helmet of course. I don't think your stuff actually has to be black, just conservatively coloured and styled and preferably matching. When you sign up for a dressage schooling show you select your test and the tests don't change. You should be able to get them from your dressage association website, so you can prepare well in advance.

There is no spot on a dressage test sheet for appearance, turn out. As long as you and your horse are clean and follow the show rules for dress you will be fine.

I don't know anything about jumper shows or cross country and my information comes from Canada so just be sure to look into the rules for your local or national dressage association for clarification.
