Need Advice For 1st Show

I am about to do my first show in the end of June - it's an Up and Over, although I really don't know what that means. I have schooled at one show before but that's the end of my horse show experience. I will be doing the hunter/jumper (2'6") on a (thoroughbred) school horse, and I am not at all worried about the horse.

I just need some standard advice on what to do, what not to do, what to expect, how things work, and what to bring. basically a simple show 101 type thing

I have the general basics down: clothes, helmet, show/saddle pads, grooming supplies, saddle, bridle, food! etc.. Is there anything that is useful to have that I probably wouldn't think to bring?

Also, I have discovered how much schooling rings freak me out..I'm not used to being surrounded by so many people in a tiny ring..any advice? The horse I will be riding is fine with the school ring, she's an angel, and acts no different than she does at home

I've only been riding for 2 years now, and I'm still not very knowledgeable about the show side of all haha

Something that I always forget (and always wish that I had brought) are those lightweight folding chairs. They don't take up much space but its nice to be able to sit down close to your trailer and eat lunch while keeping a watchful eye over your horse, especially if you have a Houdini escape artist like I do

Must be nice to have time to sit & eat! I have a step up grooming box I sit on, well sat on, once I think, lol. Buckets, haynet, manure fork, grooming supplies for yourself unless you share the horse's (had to once) & camera! Good Luck & ENJOY!

I have a bad habit of rubbing my hands on whatever is closest, so my #1 thing would be to make sure every inch of your nice clothes are covered with sweat pants and t-shirts.

I second a nice easy to get to folding chair, a cooler with your drink and yummy treat of choice.

Lots of water for horsey since I always seem to park a mile from the nearest water supply.

As far as how things work, I only know about eventing. You get there, find the office and pick up your packet and then go and walk your courses. Hopefully you're show is a friendly one and there will be plenty of nice people around to ask.

For the schooling ring, if your horse is good about jumping and you feel secure about it, warm up as little as possible. Pop over a few fences and head off to your round. Those rings do get a little nuts, so the less time you spend there the better.

Most importantly, have fun!

You just have to see your don't have to like it.
